Indian football in crisis: Supreme Court to intervene in AIFF–ISL dispute

Author:

New Delhi, India – Indian football is going through a major crisis at the moment. The Supreme Court is going to hear the ongoing dispute between the All India Football Federation (AIFF) and Football Sports Development Limited (FSDL) on August 22. The dispute is over the non-renewal of the Master Rights Agreement (MRA). This agreement is linked to the commercial operation of the Indian Super League (ISL). Its breakdown puts the future of the 11 clubs of the ISL in jeopardy – many clubs are on the verge of closure and players’ salaries may also be stuck. The clubs have warned that the upcoming 2025-26 ISL season could be in danger.

The dispute also highlights the flaws in the governance structure in Indian football. Initially, the AIFF president had said that if the agreement with FSDL ends, the federation can run the ISL itself. But later this statement had to be withdrawn in the court because the constitution of AIFF does not allow running any league unilaterally.

The Supreme Court can also take a decision on the new draft constitution of AIFF in this hearing. Many reforms are proposed in this constitution, such as fixing the term limit of the office bearers, keeping the age limit and making the Executive Committee more inclusive.

A lawyer in the court insisted that FSDL should be forced to follow its agreement or AIFF should terminate its agreement and call for new tenders. He also said that the current situation is directly affecting the players and if the problem is not resolved then there is a danger of sanctions from FIFA.

The decision of the Supreme Court will not only affect the future of MRA but will also have a deep impact on the entire Indian sports governance. Its effect will be felt by clubs, players and crores of football lovers, because at present the stability of Indian football is at stake.
