The 2018 LISCR Unification Cup kicked off on Sunday, May 26 with second division club, Tony FC and the Indian Based team advancing to the next round of the competition.
Third division side GAC was held to a 1-1 draw in full time by Tony FC before being beaten 4-2 from penalty shootouts. Saviour Ernest give the GAC the lead in the 13th minute before Tony FC got the score level in the 20th minute. Both side failed to score again as the match moved to the penalty spot where the winner was decided. Tony FC converted all of their first four shots as GAC managed to score two out of four.
The day’s second match brought together first division club, Watanga FC and players basing in India. After few chances created in the opening ten minutes, the Indian Based players got the opener in the 19th minute through Alex Whittemore. Whittemore doubled his side lead in the 43rd minute with a header from Michael Fahnbulleh’s cross.
Watanga returned from the break to score two goals through Farsedu Logan and Emmanuel Harris in the 54th and 60th minute to level the score, but the Indian Based avoided deciding the winner from the penalty spot as they went on to score the winner in the 78th minute through Amadiah Rennie.
The Indian Based team will now meet Tony FC in the next round of the competition. The two sides will play on Tuesday, May 29 at the Antoinette Tubman Stadium.
The tournament will begin on Monday, May 28 with two games at the Antoinette Tubman Stadium. Monrovia Club Breweries will take on FC Fassell in game-one at 2:00 PM before Freeport FC takes on FC Bea Mountain at 4:00 PM.
